How Fan & Frost makes money

Affiliate commissions, from Amazon. Here is exactly how that works, what it does and does not influence, and where our prices come from.

The short version

Fan & Frost is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. When you click a buy link on this site and purchase something, Amazon pays us a percentage of the sale. It costs you nothing and does not change the price you pay.

That is the entire business model. There are no sponsored posts, no paid placements, no advertising sold on this site, and no manufacturer has ever paid for, reviewed, or seen a page before it published.

Every commercial link on this site routes through our own /go/ redirect before it reaches the retailer. Two reasons: it lets us count buy-clicks per page so we know which advice people actually act on, and it means that if we ever switch a product to a different retailer, it is one configuration change rather than an edit to fifty pages.

Outbound commercial links carry rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" and open in a new tab, so search engines are told plainly that these are paid links and you do not lose the page you were reading.

Who we currently earn from

Exactly one retailer: Amazon. That is normal for a site this young — affiliate networks approve publishers who already have traffic, so a new site starts with Amazon and adds programs later.

We link to 9 other retailers and manufacturers as references — The Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Lasko, Vornado, Dyson, Midea, Hessaire, QuietCool — and we earn nothing from any of them. Those links exist because a manufacturer’s own spec page is usually the best source for a specification, and we would rather send you to the authoritative page than keep you here. If we ever join one of those programs, this page changes on the same day.

Does commission change the rankings?

No, and there is a structural reason rather than just a promise. Our picks skew toward correctly-sized, efficient units, and those are frequently the cheaper option — which means they pay us less.

A concrete example from this site: on the window air conditioner page we recommend a 6,000 BTU unit for a small bedroom and explicitly tell you not to buy the 24,000 BTU unit. The unit we recommend against costs several times as much and would pay us several times the commission. On the no-AC page the leading recommendations are free, and on several pages the honest answer is a $30 box fan.

The full method is published, including the ranking criteria in order — and price is deliberately last, because we do not know it when we rank. Prices render live at the moment you load the page.

About the prices you see

Prices come from a live data layer, refreshed daily, and they are stamped with the date they were verified. If that data is more than 48 hours old, every price on the site disappears and the buttons fall back to “check price on Amazon” instead.

That is a deliberate design choice: a stale price is worse than no price, because it looks authoritative while being wrong. We will never show you a number we cannot verify today. Where a button says “check price”, that is not an oversight — it means we do not currently hold a verified figure for that product and we are not going to guess one.

Prices on Amazon change constantly and can differ from what we last saw. The price on the retailer’s own page at the moment you check out is the only one that counts.

What we do not do

  • We do not fabricate reviews or testimonials. There are none on this site, in any form. Fan & Frost is a new publisher with no customers to quote, and inventing some would be both a lie and illegal.
  • We do not publish star ratings or review counts as if they were ours, and we emit no review or rating structured data. We hold no first-party ratings because we have tested nothing.
  • We do not claim to have tested products. Stated plainly on how we pick and in the footer of every page.
  • We do not take free products. Nothing has been sent to us, because there is no address to send it to.
  • We do not run affiliate links inside editorial prose without marking them. Every buy CTA carries #ad and a link back to this page.

Product images

Product photographs, where they appear, come from the retailer’s own product data. Where a product has no photograph available, the card shows a labeled placeholder rather than a blank space — we would rather tell you the picture is missing than hide it.

The atmospheric photography on this site — the rooms, the windows, the garages — is licensed stock. It is illustrative, never evidentiary: no photograph on this site depicts our own premises, staff or work, because we have none of those things. Credits are recorded in the repository.

Why this page exists

US Federal Trade Commission guidance requires that a material connection between a publisher and a seller be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. A single page buried in a footer does not meet that standard on its own, so the disclosure also appears inline, above the fold, before the first paid link on every page that carries one, and under every individual buy button.
