Independence, corrections and how often this changes

Independence from commission

Fan & Frost earns Amazon affiliate commissions and nothing else. No manufacturer, retailer or agency has ever paid for a placement, influenced a ranking, reviewed a page before publication, or been given advance notice of one.

If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page in question — at the top, not in a footnote — and this policy will be updated on the same day. We are not going to accept a sponsorship and quietly change this sentence.

Commission rates are not a ranking input. They are not consulted, and the ranking criteria are published in order on how we pick with price deliberately last. In practice our picks skew toward smaller, more efficient units that pay us less — see the disclosure for worked examples of us recommending against the higher-commission product.

What we will not publish

• Any claim of having tested, owned, handled or measured a product. We have not. This is the single hardest rule on the site and the one most likely to be broken by accident, so it is checked on every page before publication.
• Any credential, tenure or expertise claim for the author. No certifications, no years-in-the-field, no expert panel, no “reviewed by”.
• Any customer review, testimonial or star rating. There are none on this site and there will not be. We have no customers to quote.
• Any specification we cannot source. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the table says “not published”. We do not estimate, round, or infer from a similar model.
• Any price we cannot verify today. Prices are live or absent.
• Manufactured urgency. No countdowns, no fake scarcity, no “prices rising”.
• Step-by-step instructions for work that needs a licensed professional. Through-the-wall installs, attic fan wiring, cutting a ceiling for a whole-house fan. We tell you what the job involves and then tell you to hire someone, because this category touches electrical safety and structural work and a website is the wrong place to learn either.

Sourcing standard

Every number on this site is one of three things, and it is always clear which:

1. A published specification, with the manufacturer or dataset URL printed under the table it appears in.
2. A federal or standards figure — DOE, ENERGY STAR, EIA — cited and linked.
3. Arithmetic we performed, with the formula shown next to the result so you can reproduce it.

There is no fourth category. If a figure cannot be put in one of those three buckets, it does not ship.

Where two sources disagree and we cannot resolve which is correct from primary documentation, we publish the mechanism and omit the number. That has already happened once: the precise weighting factors inside the DOE’s SACC calculation could not be confirmed against the regulation text at the time of writing, so the SACC page explains what the test does and cites appendix CC, and states no weighting figure at all. A missing number with an explanation beats a plausible number with a shrug.

Email info@fanandfrost.com or use the contact form. Point at the page and the figure you think is wrong and we will check it against the source.

Our commitment:

• Acknowledged within 3 business days. A real reply from a person, not an autoresponder.
• Factual errors — a wrong spec, a broken calculation, a product that no longer exists — corrected within 7 days of us confirming the error.
• The correction is stated on the page and dated. We do not silently edit a number and move on. If a figure changes, the page says what it was, what it is, and when it changed.
• If a correction changes a recommendation, the ranking changes with it, and the page says that too.

Update cadence

What triggers a rewrite rather than a date bump

A “last updated” date that moves every week while the content sits still is a lie told with a timestamp. So:

• The date changes when a specification, a recommendation, a ranking, a calculation or the rate input changes.
• The date does not change for a typo fix, a styling change, a new internal link, or a price refresh — prices carry their own separate verification stamp for exactly this reason.
• A page is rewritten when a product in it is discontinued, when a standard changes, or when we find a better source that changes the answer.

The dates in the sitemap come from these document dates, never from the deploy timestamp. This site redeploys daily to refresh prices; if we stamped every page as modified on every deploy, the dates would be worthless within a week.

AI and how this site is written

Pages here are researched from primary sources — manufacturer spec pages, federal datasets, standards documents — and every figure is traced to one of them before publication. AI tooling is used in drafting and in compiling data, as it is at most publishers now, and that is precisely why the sourcing rule above is absolute: a figure that cannot be traced to a fetched source does not ship. The verification is the editorial work, and it is not optional.

Outbound links

We link to manufacturers, standards bodies and, where they have measured something we cannot, to competing publications. Those links are editorial and unpaid. Commercial links are marked #ad and carry rel="sponsored nofollow". We do not sell links, exchange links, or accept guest posts.
