By using Fan & Frost (fanandfrost.com) you agree to these terms. They are written to be read, not to be impenetrable.

What this site is

Fan & Frost publishes information about home cooling equipment. It compiles manufacturer-published specifications, federal certification data, and arithmetic we perform on both. Our full method — including the plain statement that we have not tested any of these products — is on how we pick.

It is editorial content for general information. It is not professional advice, not an engineering assessment of your particular building, and not a substitute for a qualified contractor looking at your actual room.

Electrical, installation and safety work

This matters more here than the usual boilerplate, because the category genuinely touches electrical safety and structural work.

Nothing on this site should be treated as installation instructions for work requiring a licensed professional. That specifically includes: through-the-wall air conditioner sleeves, attic and gable fan wiring, whole-house fan installation (which involves cutting a ceiling and framing an opening), any work involving a circuit, breaker or dedicated line, mini-split installation, and any refrigerant handling — which in the United States is legally restricted to certified technicians.

Where a page describes what one of these jobs involves, it is so you can judge scope and cost before you call someone. It is not so you can do it. Follow the manufacturer’s manual, follow your local code, and hire someone licensed. High-wattage cooling equipment on undersized or shared circuits is a real fire risk and we are not in a position to assess your wiring.

Accuracy, and its limits

We take accuracy seriously: every figure here traces to a published specification, a federal dataset, or arithmetic shown on the page. What we cannot promise is that a manufacturer’s published figure is itself correct, that a product still exists in the configuration we recorded, or that a specification has not changed since we read it. We re-verify quarterly and correct within the windows on the editorial policy.

Verify anything that matters against the manufacturer’s current documentation before you buy or install. Every spec table on this site links to the page the figures came from, specifically so you can.

Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, our tables say “not published”. That is not an omission on our part — it is the state of the public information.

Prices

Prices shown are drawn from a live data feed, stamped with the date they were verified, and expire after 48 hours — after which the page shows “check price” instead. Prices change constantly and can differ from what we last saw. The price on the retailer’s own page at checkout is the only one that governs your purchase.

Any purchase is a contract between you and the retailer, not with us. We do not sell, ship, warrant, service or return anything. Orders, delivery, damage, refunds and warranty claims are between you, the retailer and the manufacturer, and their terms apply. We have no visibility of your order and cannot intervene in it.

Links to other sites

We link to manufacturers, standards bodies, government datasets and occasionally to competing publications where they have measured something we cannot. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy practices.

The underlying specifications and federal data are not ours and belong to the manufacturers and agencies that published them; product names and trademarks belong to their owners, and their appearance here does not imply any endorsement in either direction.

Disclaimer and liability

This site is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Fan & Frost and Fathom & Foundry are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of this site or reliance on its content — including purchasing decisions, installation outcomes, equipment damage, or energy costs differing from our estimates.

Your electricity rate, climate, insulation, window orientation and usage pattern all differ from the national averages our calculations use. That is exactly why we publish the formulas rather than only the answers: substitute your own numbers.

Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, or affects your statutory consumer rights.

Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; the date at the top changes when we do, and continued use after a change constitutes acceptance. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which Fathom & Foundry is established.
